The water for life is an innovative program that aims to refurbish Tapukwa irrigation scheme, provide hydroelectric power and provide portable water for households.
The project is a two-year action focused on Tapukwa Irrigation Scheme located in the Henga Valley, in Rumphi District in Northern Malawi. The project addresses the nexus of food, energy and water.
The Nexus approach highlights the interdependencies between achieving water, energy and food security for human well-being, e. g. basics services and economic development, while ensuring ecologically sustainable use of globally essential resources.
It is based on an understanding of the synergies and regulated negotiation of fair trade-offs between competing uses of water, land and energy-related resources.
The aim of the project is to refurbish the irrigation scheme, provide hydroelectric power and provide portable water for households. The project is focused on smallholder farmers who total 103 with 64 male farmers and 39 females. On average the farmers have 7 dependents meaning that a total of 824 people will be reached by the end of the project.
